Gayle Smoak lives in Florida with her husband and their beloved pups. Nature has always been more than a subject—it has been a lifelong source of joy, curiosity, and creativity. She especially loves the colors, patterns, and movement found in spring and autumn, believing they reveal the endless charm and beauty of the natural world.

Drawing has been part of Gayle's life since early childhood. She jokes that every empty space in her mother's books became another place to draw, and one memorable day she even decorated the walls with her mother's lipstick while her father was watching her.

Today, she continues to find inspiration in the small details many people overlook—bird feathers, grasses blowing in the wind, weathered leaves, wildflowers, and the stories hidden within nature's patterns and colors.

Gayle works primarily in colored pencil and watercolor, creating detailed illustrations that celebrate birds, flowers, wildlife, and the changing seasons. Every piece in the Woodland Whispers collection begins as one of her original works before becoming wearable art through Nature Talks Back™.

An Artist's Journey

Gayle's background includes graphic design, drawing, and art education. She taught art to middle and high school students for many years while continuing to create her own work and also worked as a graphic designer at BellSouth in Atlanta.

She is especially fascinated by how colors interact, the meaning behind patterns and motifs, and the mystery surrounding birds like crows and ravens—subjects that often find their way into her artwork.
